Coaching can help you make a change.
What kind of change? Well, that’s up to you, but the options are endless.
Clinical Care. Teaching. Learning. Scholarship. Communication. Problem Solving. Delegation. Mentorship. Leadership. Conflict Resolution. The list goes on and on…
Whatever the need, the outcome of coaching is the same: Help you improve yourself.
What is Coaching?
Mentoring and advising are ubiquitous in medicine. In both instances, guidance and advice are sought from a senior, experienced faculty member in shared field. Coaching is different.
A coach doesn’t give you the answers or tell you what to do. A coach isn’t an oracle or wellspring of advice. A coach may not even be in the same department, institution, or field as you – a fact that can be highly beneficial for the coaching relationship.
So if not any of those things, what exactly is a coach? A coach is a guide. A coach will help you critically self-reflect so that you can generate genuine insights, clarify your priorities, and set actionable goals to make them a reality.
“A coach focuses on the positive, creating an environment of empowerment and resiliency“
Deiorio NM, Hammoud M, eds. Coaching in Medical Education: A faculty handbook. Chicago, IL: American Medical Association; 2017
What can Coaching do for you?
You’re an extremely well-trained professional physician who has overcome innumerable barriers to be a physician. You are the world’s greatest expert on your life, your experiences, your needs, and your abilities.
At the same time, you’re still human. You’re as prone to procrastination, self-doubt, time-mismanagement, conflict avoidance, mistakes in judgment, guilt, imposterism, and random misfortune as anyone else. And on top of that, as much as we want to be better, few people enjoy being told what to do.
Do you want to start a career as an educator? Pivot to a new direction after realizing its time for a change? Figure out how to reclaim that joy of clinical practice? Become a better scholar? AEC can help you identify your needs and plot a viable path to achieving them.
“Coaching presumes that the client already possesses strengths and skills to handle life’s challenges, but is not accessing them maximally.“
Gazelle G, Liebschutz JM, Riess H. Physician burnout: coaching a way out. J Gen Intern Med. 2015;30(4):508-513.
How do I know if you’re the right coach for me?
Underlying any meaningful coaching relationship is a genuine trust, appreciation, and positive regard between participants.
Our first session is dedicated to learning about each other and “diagnosing” the reason for coaching. This first session is cost-and commitment-free, and it ends with a coaching plan that is bespoke to you and your needs.
From that point on, it’s entirely in your hands: we can set up one (or more) session, or you can take some time to think about it.
“Coaching is not something you do someone. It’s something you do with someone. Successful coaching requires a relationship that consists of mutual respect, and clear and open communication.”
Robert F. Hicks PhD, author of “Coaching as a Leadership Style.”

Ok, sum it for me: Why should I invest in a coach?
Like any good coach, I’m going to take this question and reflect it back upon you through some different questions:
- When was the last time you made a meaningful self-investment?
- Can you name 3 meaningful takeaways from the last conference you attended? Heck, even one takeaway??
- Does your institution’s faculty development program adjust itself to your specific needs?
- Do you get the most out of your faculty enrichment/CME funds? Or are you leaving money on the table?
